I don't know where I've been, but I missed this post until now.

Put me down for mile 17. For me that is the "transition mile" since after running it you have only "single digits" of miles left to the finish.

Me, too, Terry - this is the first I have seen of this post.

Put me down for mile 18.

The last time I ran a marathon, I had a plan to go into a complicated interval pattern beginning at mile 18 (it was a pattern based on timed intervals that generally took me just about 8 miles to get through). It worked really well for me as I was able to increase my speed (for 30 secs to 1 min at a time, followed by a minute or so of easier running), keep a reasonable overall average, and even pass some other racers who were fighting 'the wall.' I was actually looking forward to mile 18 in the miles leading up to it, and the rest of the race felt short, rather than long. It led me to my PR for a marathon and a race that I still think of in a positive way since I felt surprisingly good after it was over.

I hope all of the miles 1-26, as well as the .2 go as well for you as that 8 mile stretch went for me, and I hope you feel terrific at the end, too.

Best of luck....

1 week ago I ran the St. George marathon. Still on cloud nine about that. If you want to read about the day, go to

Thanks for all of the support.

Keith - I thought I you several times during those later miles. When I knew I had a slight chance to qualify, I kept saying to myself "Keith would qualify." If Keith was this close, he would definitely qualify because he has the guts and determination to do it. "I'm going to run like Keith."

For the past 2 weeks I have been on self imposed running restriction. I am running for "the long haul" so I make myself take these mini breaks from training. Most of the time it is just after a marathon. Like tapering before the marathon, for me, it is a necessary evil. With the exception of the Angel's Landing hike @ Zion(3.5 hours), the Wildcat Trail hike(around 80 min), and 1 other day that I walked 60 min, I have walked each day for 30 min. No yoga, no ab work, no push ups, not much of anything except the 30 min walks which were not even fast walks. Just, what feels like lazy recovery. I know I need it, and I know it's important, so I do it. For me, more than the physical break, I think the mental break is more important. In addition, this past Sunday night I started getting sick with a cold. Monday felt worse, Tues. felt HORRIBLE, Wed - couldn't believe it - made a super fast turn around. Also, the timing of this illness COULD NOT be better. Enough of that:

Today - Sat. - first run since St. George. 3 miles easy @ 10:00 average.
Blog about it with some picks of 2 of 3, of my girls.

Sun - 3 miles easy
Monday - 3 miles easy and a little ab work, and a few push-ups, and a little plank work. Need to make it to a yoga class this week for sure.
All of my mileage this week will be easy mileage. Just working on getting my mileage back up a little.

Sun - jog 3 miles easy
Monday - jog 3 miles easy. Add a few push-ups, abs work, a few planks, easing back into some extras.
Tues - nice 5 mile run with Kelly from my house. Beautiful day - so happy for my health, the sunshine, and friends.
Wed. -yoga am and walked 5 miles with Amber

Thurs. - ran 7 miles with Dawn on the trail. We almost canceled because of the threatening skies, but was able to get the run in without even getting wet. Never cancel a run early, you may be able to get it done. 9:33 pace.
Fri. - today I met Jennifer @ Anatomies and we ran the neighborhood behind the gym. Some great hills. Was reminded about a great hill repeat, hill back there which will be super for Boston training starting mid Jan. 3.7 miles @ 10:43 pace, I think.
Sat. - today I ran 7.3 to fix that .7 from Fri.'s run. (yes, it was bugging me). This was my first run in South LA in about 9 weeks. Although it was nice and cool today, at about 2 miles
I realized the humidity is alive and thick in South LA. Especially after not running here in a while, it always amazes me, the difference between here and So. MS. Today, I used a new hydration pak (belt) to give it a try. It was not too bad, something I could get used to. Sometimes it will be nice to use instead of driving out, to drop waters. Also, when I get accustomed to wearing it, then get to a race and run without it, I will feel light as a feather. I will really like that feeling.
Sun - will be a longer walk and some yoga, I hope.

Will end the week with 27 miles of running and 1 yoga class, maybe another yoga class on Sun (computer). Glad to be back at it, and feeling ok. Will "kick it up" next week by adding a few miles and adding some quality workouts back into the week. Really looking forward to that. I am hoping to make it to the track Tues. evening, if nothing comes up between now and then.

My tentative plan for the next 8 weeks before the Rocket City marathon (Huntsville) is to concentrate on shorter speed work. I hope to run some 5ks and maybe a 10k, but all of my speed work will be short 200, 400, and maybe some 800s. Then in mid Jan. when I start Boston training I will go back to the longer speed work. I will continue to get my long run back up, prior to Huntsville. This week I had 2 - 7 mile runs, and I will build each week adding miles to my long run and adding total mileage each week. That's it - that's the plan for the next 8 weeks. Excited! I love a plan!

Petal YMCA 5k Halloween Hustle

Postby Ginny on Sun Nov 01, 2009 10:03 pm

After debating which race to run, I decided on going to the course I have not run previously. So I headed to the Petal YMCA 5k Halloween Hustle So glad that I decided on this one. I didn't realize it but this race had a lot of the Miles for Mary Claire supporters involved with the race. I encourage each of you to support Jodi and Benjamin in their project, Miles for Mary Claire to raise funds and awareness about Retts Syndrome. I am attaching the link to support their fundraiser and also you will find more information about Retts Syndrome. Mary Claire is blessed to have strong and wonderful parents. http://www.rettsyndrome.org/index.php?o ... Itemid=994

As I headed to Petal I had some very light drizzle of rain on the windshield, I came prepared with my hat. By the time I started my warm-up the rain had stopped and it was just a cloudy and comfortable morning for a race. At race time it was around 54 degrees with a real feel of 51 degrees. The race was very well supported with many volunteers and police support, and it was very organized. The race started on time. I am told there were around 70-80 runners in the race. If you haven't run this course, it is almost flat. It is an out and back course with a couple of turns along the way, and a couple of sharp curves. Just enough variety so that you do not get bored. Today, I ran 24:08. Not great, not horrible. Still not recovered from the marathon apparently. (on sept 19th I ran 23:27 with the temp at 74 degrees and real feel at 83 degrees) I will continue with my short interval track workouts and see if I can get my time down in the next few weeks.

This week's recap:
Mon - 10 min home yoga and jog 5 miles
Tues. - yoga at Kelly's and Thames track pm for 200s and 400s - 6.75 miles
Wed. - 10 min home yoga and walk 5 miles
Thurs. - yoga at Kelly's, 5 mile evening run
Fri - walk 30 min
Sat - 1.5 mile w/u, 3.1 mile race @ 24:08, 1 mile c/d
Sun - 10 min home yoga, and 11 miles at 9:20 pace
33 miles for the week, 2 yoga classes and home yoga, walk around 7 miles

Dear Ginny C. Dufrene,

This is to notify you that your entry into the 114th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 19, 2010 has been accepted, provided that the information you submitted is accurate.

My marathon journey started in Dec. of 2003 in Mobile at the First Light Marathon where I walked most of the marathon (jogged the first 4 miles and walked the rest except for jogging some of the large downhills) Went on to walk/run the next 3 marathons ,adding more jogging each time. Marathon number 5 -Feb 2005, Mardi Gras marathon, ran my first marathon, 4:54. A LOT of work, sweat, and even some tears (at San Diego - thankfully the only marathon where I "hit the wall"), but 95% FUN! ..... Marathon number 15 - St. George, 3:49:17 BQ, finally.

Exciting isn't it! Just wait 'till you get there.

Unfortunately I will be going solo again. I was hoping to take Mitzie and the kids, but the girls have a cheer competition in Florida that weekend - that takes the kids and Mitzie out. Oh well! Maybe they'll be able to go in 2011.

Thanks Terry! I am VERY EXCITED!

Last week's recap.
Monday 11-2 - walk 4 miles
Tue. - 6.5 miles total @ Thames track - 12 X 200 averaged 48 seconds
Wed. - 15 miles easy @ 10:00 min pace
Thur. - woke up with a stiff left ankle, soaked it in some warm water, loosened it up and later headed out for 6 miles. Did not feel anything in the ankle after soaking it to warm it up. (Susan - this is one of those times that I mentioned to you last week. I slowed the pace of this run (10:49 average) and then I iced my foot after the run. I will take it as a warning. So I will continue on, but cautiously. Next week will be a step back week in mileage just to give the ankle/body time to rest and regroup.)
Fri. - walked 30 minutes
Sat. - went to Mobile to run the Senior Bowl 5k. This was my first time to run the 5k, I normally run the 10k. No issues with the ankle at all, not stiff, no sore, nothing. I really wanted to run under 24:00, 23:59 would be good, but I ended up running 23:45.(Robbie told me I won the master's. I never wait for awards for the large races because I assume I will not place) Last week I ran 24:08. I am happy about the progress in the 5k. Ran a total of 6.5 miles today.
Sun - 7 miles in Gulf Shores.
Ended with 41 miles of running, 6 miles walking, and 2 yoga classes.

This week - goal - cut some calories and this will be a step back week in mileage.
great weekend in Gulf Shores = extra lbs.
Mon - walk 30 min.
