|
|
Hi guys,
I was reading the minutes of the April 6 club meeting and saw the information on a "Cinco De Mayo event". It sounds great! However, I just wonder whether there is any other option different to the Mexican Kitchen restaurant for dinner. There are several eateries in the Hattiesburg area, and the Mexican Kitchen is.... welll.... not the best.
The location is great and the building is pretty but frankly, the service is very poor and the food is not good at all. The food is not Mexican: taco shells and refried beans from the box (prolly costo) and the salsa is pureed. Aside from that....lol..... is perfect! - by the way, I don't care very much about the prices!
I would rather eat in Taco Bell or buy a box of frozen tacos in Walmart and put them in the microwave!

Because you asked so nicely, the event will be held at Jackson Station. Vicki has reserved the building out there on May 5th, and we will bring our own food/decorations and music. I believe there is even a stove so you can cook our favorite Columbian dish. Charles can spice it up a little with his favorite Caymanian dish, Kily with his Honduras dish, and Vicki can throw in some Puerto Rican Salsa. Since I am of German heritage, I will taste test every thing and let you know whose dish is the best!! We will post details of Vicki's event soon. _________________ Catch you on the run!! Audrey

Looks like I have a final exam that day but not certain of the time. I hope that it works out so that we can come. This will be the last final examination of my university career (not counting my comprehensive exams to be held this summer) so I will be ready for a party afterward!!

My final has be revised into a 'take home' due that Friday so we are planning to come for the run and the eating. (The other final exam I have this semester is also a 'take home' but due by 9 a.m. on May 5).
What kind of run is planned for May 5? Are people really interested in doing 5 miles? Is anyone taking it seriously? I don't know the exact mileage, but from Jackson I like to turn left at the Pond Road (is it called Thoreau or Waldon, I can never remember) and go to where it ends at old 42 and double back - this adds a little hill and often a nice breeze on the way back. To get five miles, we would have to keep going toward Clyde on the Trace to somewhere between the 1 1/2 and 2 miles from Jackson before turning back.
Of course the easiest 5 mile route is going from Jackson to the 2.5 marker and back, the turning point is just short of the 10 mile Trace sign w/flag. If someone wants to do some kind of speed work that night, or more than 5 miles, I am up for that, too, as long as I know ahead of time.

I like the idea of getting off the trail also. Thanks Sheryl for that idea. I'm glad to hear so many people are coming. We should have a really good time!

Another option is to run on the dirt - uphill to the left just before the rain stop. I used to run on the trails to the right, but now there are no trespassing signs up that way. I haven't been up to the left for a couple of months (will check it out between now and 5/5) but it comes out on that same pond road. I don't have a GPS, however, to measure a 5 mi route - maybe I will get ambitious and put the knobby tires back on my cyclocross bike and use the odometer.

Great food Monday!! Thanks to everyone who made or brought stuff. It was a real carbo loader's dream. And thanks to the idea people and organizers, it was interesting to see the inside of the building.
Sorry more people didn't show up but Don and I enjoyed ourselves. It was also one of my only late evening bike rides on the Trace (going home to the Gateway from Jackson) and it was really enjoyable. First time all year that I've seen lightning bugs, and we didn't encounter any creatures on the Trace (although there were a lot of sounds all around). If you have a bike and a light, and have a chance, I'd recommend trying an evening or night ride sometime, it was incredibly peaceful compared to how it is during the day.

I regret that I couldn't make the fiesta. Please, someone write a report so I can at least enjoy the description of the event. _________________ Becky Ryder

Becky, Sheryl's description pretty much covered it!! We started off with a run, some people ran 5, I ran with Charles and Ben Hughes and we ran close to 4. This was actually the longest run I have done, and I did ok. I think Sheryl and Terry Lawhead took off at a blistering pace and left all the mere mortals behind. We came back to Jackson and ate plenty of good food and Kily supplied the music. We had a brief discussion of the Relays and also discussed the money due USM and Deborah wrote a check for Dawn to give to Jim. A good time was had by all, except we missed the Ryders!!! How is Hollie doing? Is his foot healing well? Please update us and let him know we are all thinking of him!! _________________ Catch you on the run!! Audrey

Thanks to Vicki for organizing the event and to everyone else who helped, brought food, music, cleaned up, etc. I had a great time and look forward to next year. Perhaps we can find room in the budget for a mariachi band and a margarita machine?
I had to go back tonight and re-run the course with my Garmin so I know exactly how far Sheryl and I ran (5.25 miles). I tried letting it go, but I couldn't.
Later,
Terry

Cinco de Mayo was fun and I look forward to doing it again next year so mark May 5, 2009 on your calendar. Terry - I'm going to start working on the mariachi band and margarita machine now - great idea!
We had 20 members participate and 11 ran. Sorry - no pictures. Thanks to everyone who came and brought the outstanding food.
