Free For All Summer Series 2 Mile Race Report New Orleans

Postby Chad Dufrene on Sat Jul 12, 2008 9:03 pm

Thursday July 10 City Park New Orleans 7:06pm 91 degrees humid
About 400 runners showed up for this race. Many college and high school kids getting ready for their cross country season went out very fast. I went out 5:18 for the first mile according to the Garmin (Heart rate 188bpm) and was in 20th place at the turn around. Held on and passed a couple of kids in the next half mile. The last half mile a high schooler passed me and I decided to sit on him for a while. We rounded the last corner and I could see the finish line in the distance. Took a quick glance at the Garmin and saw 1.73miles(Heart rate 190bpm). 1/4 mile to go and the high schooler was kicking so we went about as hard as I could go without a full out sprint. We were passing people fast and the finish was getting close. About 50 yards from the finish I kicked hard and edged the kid by 1 second. Somebody said the kid 2 places behind me was 9th so I figured I finished 7th place in 10:42(2 miles). The Garmin lap times were 5:18(1mile), 10:37(2miles), 10:42(2.04miles race distance, avg heart rate 190bpm, max heart rate 194bpm). Winner was Andy Florick(sp) LSU distance runner something just under 10:00. No official times were recorded as this is a free race and intended as a training run. Next Thursday they are having another free race in City Park. This is a fast course if anyone is interested. Check out the NOTC for info if any of you plan on going. Maybe I'll see someone there.
