Fairly new runners thoughts about racing

Postby kblott on Mon Sep 22, 2008 11:01 am

O.k. Guys. I have been pretty quiet up to this point but when you actually win your first reward at one of the races then you can't keep quiet anymore.

First of all, congratulations to all the winners and thanks to all who worked the SCC 5k in Laurel. And I want to thank everyone for encouraging me to race more and more.

I was really shocked to receive the 2nd place finish in my age group (40-45) but it really felt pretty good. But what really shocked me the most was shaving 2 minutes (SCC 5K time 36.47) off my time from the previous Labor Your Legs 5K time (38.49). Not only did I accomplish my usual goal of running the entire 3.1 miles without stopping, I shaved 2 minutes off the time going mostly uphill. Doesn't sound much like a goal when you write it down but I have been meeting my goals a little at the time and have enjoyed every minute of it.

So, does this mean that I'm doing something right in my training?

Currently I am training two nights a week with the My 1st 5K group at USM. My 1st 5K sounds funny after you've run three already. I continue to cross train with weights, elliptical machine, treadmills and stationary bicycles three days a week. And I do my long runs on Saturday mornings (need to increase the distance on this one). The two nights a week that I run with the group I try to run what my body feels like is a faster pace.

I look forward to a lot more races in the future.

Thank you guys for all the encouragement at the races and I hope to see you all more in the future.

Hi Karen!
WOW!!!! That is so awesome. Congrats on your first award and for shaving 2 minutes of your previous PR; I am glad you had a good time! Keep up the good work. It was your first trophy, but it is not going to be the last one. Many more will come. Way to go girl!

Karen---whatever you're doing, keep it up. Your idea of cross training is good in that it will help keep you injury-free.

You are making tremendous progress and you should continue to improve.
