Run/ Walk 30 Minutes a Day for 100 Days

Any topic related to running

A very difficult run

Postby ryderruns on Fri Feb 06, 2009 9:51 am

I've been running the treadmill as I pamper my hip soreness, but yesterday was very sunny and I just had to get outside. So many things seemed to be wrong with my run. First my ipod was acting up, then I simply could not get comfortable with anything beyond a snail pace. Everything was tight and I was just generally fatigued. This week I started back lifting weights (2 days) and doing Pilates/yoga (2 days) and I guess this streak is taking a toll.

Having written all the negative stuff, I must say that I'm pleased to still
have the streak going. I ran 3 miles and walked 1.25 in a time of 57
minutes. Friday will probably be the minimum 30 minutes with at least 1 mile of running and it will be even slower than today. I'm planning to do a 5K race at Dauphin Island, AL on Saturday. That will be a test of how my body is dealing with all these changes. I really have no expectations other than to attempt to be under 30 minutes.

My latest goal setting is to establish PRs for my age 64. If the first 5K is really slow, I'll have the rest of the year to make it better. It will be interesting to see how that works out.

You're my Inspiration

Postby InvisibleGirl on Fri Feb 06, 2009 12:15 pm

I just hope that when I'm 64, I've got as much motivation and determination as you to keep pressing on toward goals such as this.

Thanks for inspiring me and so many others,

Day 37

Postby ryderruns on Fri Feb 06, 2009 1:19 pm

This morning I went to Kelly's Yoga class at the Y. This week I did Pilates on Tuesday and Thursday, weights on Monday and Wednesday and continued with the streak. Today was a 1 mile run and a bit over 1.25 mile walk in about 36 minutes.

Day 38

Postby ryderruns on Sat Feb 07, 2009 8:51 pm

The streak is still good. Today I raced the 5K and with additional running and walking, I logged a total of 3.75 miles running and 1.75 miles walking in about 60 minutes.

Becky - can you give us an update to the challenge, is it just you and me, or do we have others who are still participating. Also, do you have a tally, to date, or are you waiting until the end to count the minutes. Just curious!

Monday - 62 min
Tues. - 65 min
Wed - 42 min
Thurs - 75 min
Fri - 30 min
Sat. - 50 min
Sun - am & pm - total 179 minutes today.

Day 39

Postby ryderruns on Sun Feb 08, 2009 9:09 pm

In the previous post Ginny asked if there were other people still doing the challenge. I really do not know. Ginny and I are the only ones who are posting, although there are a couple of people who have told me they were going to do it.

I have been saving all of Ginny's posts and emails and in a day or two I will give an update.

As for me, today I ran 4 miles and walked 1.25. This was done at the practice trail run. I logged 74 minutes.

40 days (actually 45)

Postby ryderruns on Mon Feb 09, 2009 10:11 pm

Today was my 45th straight day to run. Hollie and I went out to Jackson Road where he walked 5 miles and I ran 4 miles and walked 2.5. What a beautiful day!

Days 41 and 42

Postby ryderruns on Wed Feb 11, 2009 8:28 pm

I forgot to post yesterday. The streak continues! Yesterday I did speed at Thames with a total of 5 miles running including 6 x 400 @ 2:15. I also walked 1.25 miles.

Today I had a really hard time running. I had anticipated that it would be ugly because I usually rest or run really easy on the day after speed. I went to the Gateway with the intention of running and walking 8 miles. As soon as I got started I knew I probably would not be able to do that. It ended up being 6.5 miles total with 4 miles running and 2.5 miles walking.

Days 43 and 44

Postby ryderruns on Fri Feb 13, 2009 3:29 pm

Last night I ran about 4 miles with the Track on Tap group. Thank you to Mike G, Vicki and Jim for taking turns running with me. Hopefully, next time I will be faster.

Today was noteworthy for several reasons. First, I had my longest run (7
miles) since November 11. Second, in the past 7 days I have run more miles (31.75) than I have in a very long time.

I had planned to do a 6 mile run tomorrow, but Tate has 2 baseball games on schedule for tomorrow and there is no way I would put running before getting to see him play, so I needed to do the run today. I went to a very tough Kelly S. yoga class this morning and by the time it was over, it looked like the predicted thunderstorm was about to arrive. So, I got on the treadmill with the intention of doing the 6 miles. I knew I would have a mentally tough time doing that distance on the treadmill so I kept playing with the speed and I got a very nice Fartlek workout. By the time I had gotten to 6 miles I felt OK and decided to go for one more. By doing a Fartlek workout, the average pace was pretty slow because I need a long recovery from the fast efforts.

After finishing the run, I walked .5 and then did lots of stretching.
Tomorrow will probably be the minimum of 1 mile run and enough walking to get 30 minutes and continue the streak.

Day 45

Postby ryderruns on Sat Feb 14, 2009 10:51 pm

After yesterday's 7 miles on the treadmill, I would normally take today as a rest day. No way---I've got to keep this streak going. When I went out for my attempt at exercise, my goal was to run a minimum of 1 mile and then walk enough to get the 30 minute minimum. As usual, once I got going I just *had* to do more. The total distance was 5 miles with half running and half walking in a time of 71 minutes.

Day 46

Postby ryderruns on Sun Feb 15, 2009 10:50 pm

I think I'm beginning to adapt to this running every day. I'll probably have severe withdrawal when I finally take a day off. My plan is to keep it going for as long as I can up to about mid-May when I'll need to start my hill walking/stadium step hopping routine so I can get ready for two separate hikes of the Grand Canyon.

In the meantime, the streak continues. Today I ran 5 miles and walked 1 mile.

Day 47

Postby ryderruns on Mon Feb 16, 2009 4:14 pm

Very easy day with the exception of doing weights. This was one of those days when I just did not want to lift weights. Because I knew that if I ran outside, I'd never force myself to go to the Y to lift, I went to the Y and ran on the treadmill so that I could hop off and do the weights before I had time to talk myself out of it.

I ran 3 miles and walked 1.5 miles in about 59 minutes.

100 days

Postby Neonwolfen on Tue Feb 17, 2009 12:08 pm

Ms. Becky,

Nearly dropped the ball on your 100 day challenge yesterday. I woke up sick, but decide that if I couldn't run - maybe I could walk. It was probably one of the harder things I have done, but I continue to try to meet your challenge.

My Streak is Over

Postby ryderruns on Tue Feb 17, 2009 7:26 pm

This morning at 3:30 am I was awakened with severe abdominal cramping. I got up and took some Pepto Bismol which usually does the trick when I have such issue. At 4:00 am it was worse so I took another dose. By 4:30 I was suffering severe nausea which continued for a couple of hours. Once I "upchucked" enough to get rid of whatever was causing the problem, I started having chills, headache, and total body muscle soreness. I'm diagnosing this as food poisoning.

I've been in bed most of the day and I also been dealing with periodic diarrhea. I am just now beginning to feel better (about 15 hours since the problem began). I have been able to eat about a half a can of chicken noodle soup, a cup of hot tea, about 8 ounces of water and about 12 ounces of diet coke. That's the extent of my food intake for the day.

There is a possibility that I could manage to get in a mile run and the total of 30 minutes, but I'm not willing to do that. Mainly, it is because I just don't want to---it makes running such a chore and I never want to feel that way. I want to run when I want to run and I simply do not want to today. So, my streak is over and I will get back to my normal training routine. I will certainly continue reading all the reports from those of you who are still in the game.

I wondered where you were last night at Thames!! I hope you are doing bettter. Charles says don't let Holly cook for you anymore! If we can do anything to help, let us know!! Charles can make homemade soup!! (notice how I volunteered Charles to cook, not me)!!

As far as the 100 day challenge, I am out. I try to do something everyday, but it would not constitute running everyday.

Again, hope you feel better!
Catch you on the run!! Audrey
